The Grand Hall of the Higher Institute of Agronomy in Lisbon hosted the final meeting of the Vertical Algas project, an occasion for sharing and reflection that brought together project leaders, co-leaders, and partner organizations to present the key results achieved over four years of collaborative work.
As part of the Blue Bioeconomy Pact and led by Necton, the Vertical Algas project represented an investment of 44 million euros and involved 37 research institutions, companies, and associations, establishing itself as the largest national project dedicated to research, innovation, and the valorization of algae.
During the session, the advances made in the areas of production, processing, and application of algal biomass were presented, as well as the new products, processes, and solutions developed for the human and animal food, agriculture, cosmetics, nutraceuticals, and biorefinery sectors. The project’s impact on the country’s scientific and technological capacity, on knowledge generation, and on bridging the gap between research and industry was also highlighted.
The partners further emphasized that, despite the progress made, significant challenges remain, particularly regarding the legislative and regulatory framework. Nevertheless, the consensus was clear: Vertical Algas has left a solid legacy for the sector, helping to position Portugal among Europe’s leading players in the algae-based blue bioeconomy and paving the way for new opportunities for innovation and sustainable growth.
